Pakistan’s Khushdil Shah Fined 50% of Match Fee for Code of Conduct Breach Against New Zealand

In the first T20 International (T20I) between Pakistan and New Zealand on March 16, 2025, Pakistani all-rounder Khushdil Shah was fined 50% of his match fee for breaching Level 2 of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Code of Conduct. The incident occurred during the eighth over of Pakistan’s innings when Khushdil made inappropriate physical contact with New Zealand bowler Zakary Foulkes while running between the wickets.

Details of the Incident:

As Khushdil attempted a single, he collided with Foulkes, who had his back turned. The ICC deemed this contact as “inappropriate physical contact with a high degree of force,” categorizing it as reckless and avoidable. This action violated Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to inappropriate physical contact during an international match.

Sanctions Imposed:

Alongside the 50% match fee fine, Khushdil received three demerit points on his disciplinary record. This was his first offense within a 24-month period. According to ICC regulations, accumulating four or more demerit points within 24 months can lead to suspension points, potentially resulting in a ban from matches. Khushdil accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Jeff Crowe, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

Match Outcome:

The match proved challenging for Pakistan, as they were bowled out for a mere 91 runs. New Zealand’s bowlers, Jacob Duffy and Kyle Jamieson, delivered exceptional performances, taking four and three wickets respectively. Khushdil was the top scorer for Pakistan with 32 runs, while only two other players reached double figures. New Zealand comfortably chased the target, securing a nine-wicket victory and leading the five-match series 1-0.

Implications for Khushdil Shah:

The demerit points serve as a caution for Khushdil, emphasizing the importance of maintaining discipline on the field. Should he accumulate more demerit points within the next 24 months, he risks suspension. This incident underscores the ICC’s commitment to upholding the spirit of the game and ensuring fair play among all participants.
