Zelensky Criticizes U.S. for ‘Weak’ Response to Deadly Russian Missile Strike on Hometown

In the aftermath of a devastating Russian missile strike on Kryvyi Rih, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly criticized the United States for its restrained response to the attack that claimed the lives of 18 individuals, including nine children. The assault, which targeted a residential area near a playground and restaurant, also left 72 people injured.

President Zelensky expressed his discontent with the U.S. Embassy’s statement, which condemned the attack without directly attributing it to Russia. U.S. Ambassador Bridget Brink’s message on social media read: “Horrified that tonight a ballistic missile struck near a playground and restaurant in Kryvyi Rih. More than 50 people injured and 16 killed, including 6 children. This is why the war must end.” Zelensky found this response inadequate, stating, “Such a powerful country, such a powerful nation—and such a weak reaction. They are afraid even to say the word ‘Russia,’ speaking about a missile that killed children.”

In contrast, other international representatives were more explicit in their condemnation. British Ambassador Martin Harris remarked, “While Ukraine pursues peace, Russia is striking civilians far from the frontline.” Similarly, German Ambassador Martin Jaeger stated, “Russia is the aggressor” in his post about the strike.

The missile strike has intensified existing tensions between Ukraine and the United States. President Donald Trump’s administration has been advocating for a partial ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, aiming to improve relations with Moscow. However, Ukraine perceives this approach as lenient towards Russian aggression. Zelensky emphasized the necessity of calling out Russia directly to prevent further violence, asserting, “It’s wrong and dangerous to keep silent about the fact that it is Russia that is killing children with ballistic (missiles).

In response to the ongoing aggression, Zelensky has been engaging with European military leaders to discuss the potential deployment of a multinational peacekeeping force in Ukraine. Meetings with British and French military chiefs focused on structuring a European-led force comprising between 10,000 to 30,000 troops. The United Kingdom has expressed support for enhancing Ukraine’s military deterrence, while the U.S. remains hesitant to offer security guarantees.

The recent attack on Kryvyi Rih underscores the urgent need for decisive international action. Zelensky continues to call for increased global support and sanctions against Russia to deter further aggression and to hold the perpetrators accountable.
